HAWICK teenager Christopher Lynn is one of two Borders winners in the prestigious Godolphin Stud and Stable Staff Awards.
Eighteen-year-old Lynn, who works at Ferdy Murphy’s Yorkshire yard, won the David Nicholson Newcomer Award at a London presentation ceremony earlier this week.
The prize is given to someone who has “shown the desire to improve” and who has “progressed their skills and knowledge”, having been employed in the industry for less than three years.
Lynn has worked as a stable lad with Ferdy Murphy for two seasons and is held in high regard by his boss. “He’s a brilliant asset to the team,” said Murphy. “At only 18, he’s remarkable for his age, and I can see him going far in the future.”
The other Borders winner was Willie Cowe, head lad at James Ewart’s Langholm stable.
He won the Dedication to Racing Award, presented to a long-serving member of staff who has worked in racing for more than 10 years and “offering a wealth of experience and dedication to the job”.
Cowe previously worked at Robert McDonald’s Duns base with Sandown and Ascot victor Somerled, before joining Cumbrian trainer Nicky Richards where he was associated with top chasers The Grey Monk and Monet’s Garden.
Since joining The Craig, he has established himself as Ewart’s right-hand man and is a highly regarded member of his racing team.
