A SECOND bite of the cherry awaits Selkirk Victoria this weekend after they managed to hold hosts Grangemouth to a 1-1 draw in the second round of the Scottish Amateur Cup last Saturday.

Tomorrow, the Central League outfit travel down to the Borders for a replay.

Looking ahead to the fixture, Vics centre half Ryan Pritchard told The Wee Paper: “We played on a huge, flat 3G park at Grangemouth and it allowed us to get the ball down and play to our strengths. Our park will be a lot tighter, so there won’t be as much freedom for either side to pass the ball around.

“Despite missing a couple of first team players last week we created plenty of chances, but it looks like we are close to full strength on Saturday.”

Grangemouth were quick off the blocks last weekend, forcing Selkirk keeper Jamie Lyall into a couple of good saves.

But, for the remainder of the half, the visitors settled nicely. Ryan Clapperton went close, his lob from the corner of the box going narrowly over.

Ross Purves came within inches of scoring for Selkirk on the hour when, after a driving run from the middle of the park, his strike from the edge of the box crashed off the crossbar and bounced away to safety.

The home side opened the scoring with 20 minutes to go when their striker hit the ball across Lyall and into the net.

The goal prompted a change of formation as Selkirk pushed for an equaliser and the gamble paid off.

Clapperton dribbled past the Grangemouth full back before cutting the ball back to Darren Munro, who drove his shot past the keeper before he had a chance to move.

z Selkirk’s Image Printers Cup tie against Heriot-Watt University was cancelled last week due to Yarrow Park being under water. This week Mick McKinnon’s outfit travel to the capital to play Lothian Thistle Hutchison Vale in the second round of the South Challenge Cup, kick-off 2.30pm.
