SPORTS clubs throughout the Borders are being invited to a special summit to pledge Support for the Community Sports Hub initiative.

The event will be held on Sunday, November 25 at the Scottish Borders Campus in Galashiels and is being organised by Borders Sport and Leisure in partnership with Scottish Borders Council and sportscotland, whose chief executive, Stewart Harris, will be in attendance.

The Community Sports Hub initiative supports the Scottish Government’s 2014 legacy plan and aims to provide a focal point to bring local sports clubs and people together to share resources and expertise and make it easier for more people to engage in active and health lifestyles.

A number of hubs across the Scottish Borders will be officially launched at the summit and the day will include workshops on driving these forward in addition to an invitation for all those in attendance to sign a specially produced banner pledging their commitment to the initiative.

Vicky Davidson, executive member for culture, sport and community learning at Scottish Borders Council said: “The Community Sports Hubs is a national sportscotland initiative and it is one that Scottish Borders Council is very happy to support.

“We can achieve more in each area by working together, and with better joint planning, bring more people into sport in the Borders.

“We are delighted to be working in partnership with sportscotland and Borders Sport and Leisure, who will use their expertise to make the most of this opportunity.”

Ewan Jackson, chief executive of Borders Sport and Leisure added: “We hope that sports clubs across the Scottish Borders will embrace this new opportunity to work together and share resources and expertise in order to bring even more people into sporting activities. We have a host of brilliant, enthusiastic, committed sports clubs and we aim to utilise the Community Sports Hub initiative to enable them to become even stronger and more successful in the future.”

Borders Sport and Leisure will be hosting a number of open meetings prior to the summit when local sports clubs will be given the opportunity to find out more about the planned hubs in the Borders and be given the opportunity to help to shape their format and role.
