Glasgow High Kelvinside 1

Fjordhus Reivers Ladies I 3

NATIONAL DIVISION TWO

Fjordhus Reivers hit the road for the away trip to Anniesland, Glasgow, and with only 12 players available it was crucial that no injuries occurred during the game.

Keen to build on the previous week’s performance, the team started in a very confident and composed manner.

The Glasgow side were not short of some very skilful junior national players, but Reivers were showing some serious determination to block all attempts on goal, before injecting some serious pace on the ball themselves.

Building from the back, and with long periods of possession, Reivers had a number of shots well saved by the GHK keeper.

Laura Maclean scored first for the Reivers from a long mazy run 15 minutes into the game, after receiving a deception pass from player/coach Janet Jack.

Egged on by captain Pippa Bell, the Borderers surged on, and from another superb run, Mclean swept the ball to Jedburgh speedster Martha Douglas who rocketed the ball past the keeper.

Reivers expected a full press from GHK after the break, but they continued to play into the hands of the Borderers by sitting back on the half-way line.

The one break the hosts did manage, however, saw a Reivers defender deemed to challenge illegally in the circle and they put away the penalty.

Reivers channelled their frustration into fantastic attacking play and excellent linking from Elena Lunn and Mclean, with skill and ambition coming from the engine room of Jackie Wilson and Denise Fairbairn.

Lunn ran down the left and passed to Sarah Mathers, who had her shot blocked initially, but got her stick to it on the rebound and scored.

The Fjordhus defence was well organized throughout, with youngsters Zoe Higgins, Nicola Weallans and Emily Newlands playing with a maturity well beyond their years and coach Jack was incredibly proud of her players who all showed so much determination, effort and composure.

Reivers: S. Tennant, J. Jack, E. Newlands, N. Wheallens, Z. Higgins, P. Bell, D. Fairbairn, J. Wilson, M. Douglas, L. Mclean, E, Lunn, S. Mathers.
