This year’s Border Bogie Challenge, a fast-paced, time-trial race in a homemade cartie down a hill on rural country roads around Denholm on May 26, is hoping to turbo-boost its youth participation this year.

Organisers of the event, which last year raised £4,500 for local causes like renewing Denholm’s Church roof, are calling for more young people to design, engineer and race their bogies, and help fundraise for charities on the stalls.

Tony Lockey, co-creator of the Border Bogie, said: “Places are running out as we have had huge entry interest from budding Bogie racers from all over the UK, including Essex, Gloucester, Hull and Inverness.

“As well as this year’s Scottish Junior Bogie Championship and an adult section of the Scottish Cartie Association Grand Prix, we have a new cycle race called ‘King/Queen of the Hill’ which involves a daredevil downhill run of 1km over jumps and obstacles in groups of four riders.

“On the Denholm Green we’ll have Scottish food and drink, a massive car boot sale, the St Boswells Brass Band, dancing around the maypole from the Marshall School of Dance, and Border Cycles will have bikes and a bike pump track for people to try out.”
