Judy Steel will be in St Andrews this weekend to launch a new edition of Horse Tales & Saddle Songs.

The Selkirk writer will host a recital of her anthology of equine poetry at StAnza, Scotland’s international poetry festival, with Borders performers Matthew Burgess and Elspeth Smellie.

Since its initial publication last year, the collection has been updated with a variety of old and modern poems.

The collection now includes classics such as TS Eliot’s The Journey of the Magi and Edwin Muir’s The Horses as well as extracts from internationally acclaimed Scottish Gaelic poet, Sorley MacLean.

Judy said: “I’m honoured to be part of this year’s StAnza Festival.

“My lifelong love of horses sits side by side with my love of poetry and so I’m delighted that in this revised edition of Horse Tales & Saddle Songs I’m able to share some of the most memorable pieces that have inspired me over the years – as well as some I discovered while preparing the collection.

“I have also added short notes to all the poems about their authors, their subject matter, or my relationship to them.“

The book is available for £10 from.amazon.co.uk, with all profits donated to the Riding for the Disabled Association. The anthology has a foreword by the Princess Royal.
