AITKEN TURNBULL BORDER LEAGUE
UNDER-15 CHAMPIONSHIP FINAL
Peebles Netball played host to the final matches in this year’s Border League with supporters enjoying the closest match of the campaign and some of the best play of the season.
At under-15 level, Peebles teams have dominated the league, with both A and B outfits (Peebles S3s and Peebles S2s respectively) winning their semi-finals convincingly, resulting in an all-Peebles final.
This certainly created difficulties for Peebles coach Linda Nicholson and team manager Lynn Hudson, who had to spread their allegiances across both squads, with tactics for each team clearly an open secret.
Clubmates in practice they may be, but there was no love lost between the two Tweeddale teams when they took to the court. Peebles B had a better start, and with nothing to lose and all to play for, they took control of the first few minutes, suggesting that perhaps there may be a major upset on the cards. But the A team started to settle into their steady rhythm, driving the ball from defence to shooters with breathtaking speed, into the safe hands of Susanne Krabbendam (GA) and Kerry Troup (GS).
Mhairi Jackson, A team GD, celebrated her birthday weekend by producing a wealth of balanced interceptions, with team-mate Neve McLean once again on scintillating form with an eye-catching performance in WA.
However, it was the emergence of some real talent amongst the B team which thrilled many spectators, including powerful Kerri Dow in centre court and shooting duo Alana Craigmile (GA) and on-form Sarah Hudson (GS), all of whom held their own against their older clubmates.
Peebles A: N. Berthelson, S. Krabbendam, K. Troup, N. McLean, L. Graham, C. Dobson, A. Mackinnon, M. Jackson, N. Cannon (N. Pettitt unavailable for final day’s play).
Peebles B: G. Gass, S. Hudson, A. Pender, A. Craigmile, S. Bailey, E. Axon, K. Dow, M. Farer, A. Miller, S. Smith, R. Espie.
