CHESTERS Crossroads has long been famous as the birthplace of the late Steven “Hizzy’” Hislop, but the Southdean Hall buzzed on Saturday night with the celebration of another local lad who is winning top prizes locally and nationally.
Kevin Rae, who was born, grew up, and now works from the village with his dad Bill as an agricultural contractor, has risen to rally-driving fame as co-driver with David Bogie.
After three consecutive victories in the Scottish Rally Championships, in 2011 they also took the MSA British Rally Championship – the first team ever to hold both titles simultaneously.
Southdean Community Council was keen to mark this event, and with help of some family members, set out to surprise him with a party and presentation.
Local artist Hugh Roberts – himself a former rally driver who now runs an off-road driving school – made a striking painting of the Mitsubishi Lancer EVO IX. This was presented to a delighted Kevin on Saturday night along with a painting by Linda Lovatt subscribed to by his family.
Revelry continued into the small hours – celebrating no doubt the latest victory – the previous week’s Snowman Rally in Inverness.
2012 has started well for Kevin Rae.
