The first Borders Secondary Schools Cross-country Championship in a decade saw Peebles High claim the overall title.

Borders Sport and Leisure Trust resurrected the event at Netherdale in Galashiels, and 150 athletes from seven schools took part.

The cross-country course was structured to help experienced runners improve their skills and performance, but also to allow first-timers the opportunity to try out the sport.

Ewan Jackson, chief executive of BSLT, said: “The championship forms part of our efforts to establish the Borders as a vibrant and strong area for athletics in Scotland.

“We want the Borders to be a breeding ground for future champions and an area recognised throughout Scotland as one which punches above its weight.

“It was a huge success and we plan to make this an annual event.”

The championship was organised in conjunction with the Scottish Borders Athletics Development Group and students from Borders College assisted with marshalling on the day.
