THE inaugural 2012 Borders Sport and Leisure Trust indoor cricket league has batted off in style.

Featuring teams of six players from clubs across the region and a select team from the Borders Under-16s squad, the tournament takes place on Sundays, 2-4pm at the Gytes Leisure Centre until April 15. The teams all play each other once in a 10-overs-a-side match.

The first draw saw three teams, Peebles I, Peebles II and Biggar, all play each other. Peebles I gained four points, beating both other teams. Peebles II gained two points.

Sunday’s game featured hotly-contested matches between Gala, Kelso and Murrayfield. Gala triumphed, winning both its games, and Murrayfield beat Kelso. The leaderboard currently stands with Peebles I and Gala tied at the top on four points, Peebles II and Murrayfield each with two points and Kelso and Biggar yet to score.

Tournament organiser Neil Cameron told TheSouthern: “Our first indoor sixes league had got off to a really positive start ahead of probably the most exciting league cricket season in the Borders for some years.

A series of indoor games is the perfect way for cricketers to blow away those winter cobwebs, work on their fitness, cricket skills and techniques. The fast-paced format also makes it great fun.”

The new league builds on previous highly successful indoor cricket initiatives backed by BSLT, including the annual women’s events.

Ewan Jackson, chief executive of BSLT added: “Interest in cricket in the Borders is thriving and the new indoor league is the perfect way to encourage participation in the game outwith the main playing season.”

The next match will be held on Sunday, March 4.
