Peebles Amateurs 1
Gala Hotspur 0
BAL DIVISION C
THREE sending-offs and a last-minute goal provided an action-packed afternoon at Whitestone Park, which resulted in Gala Hotspur’s first Division C defeat of the season.
Spurs had not played for a month and their rustiness, as well as the sodden pitch and driving wind, meant they struggled in the first half.
Twice, Barry Thomson struck Gala’s framework as Peebles dominated early on, but slowly Gala responded and both Callum Gass and Scott Nightingale were sent clean through, only for Nightingale to strike the post and Gass’ effort to be saved by home goalkeeper Ryan Swan.
Gala endured a chaotic start to the second half when a moment of madness by goalkeeper Glen Murray after an altercation with Borthwick meant he was sent off by referee Eddie Walsh.
But Peebles were also soon down to 10 men when David Meldrum harshly received his second yellow card for shooting at goal after whistler Walsh had blown for offside.
Gala were well on top with the wind at their backs, but missed a series of great chances. Gass had an effort cleared off the line, while Swan denied Nightingale with a brilliant save with 10 minutes left.
Gass was then sent off for a second yellow, and Peebles used their numerical advantage as an unmarked Borthwick scored from eight yards in the closing stages.
