THE most recent round of the Agrii Border Curling League took in three games in which Greenlaw defeated Lammermuir 8-4, Yester went 8-5 against Glendale and Swinton stopped Foulden at 6-4, writes Alastair Lindsay.
Other results have accumulated recently, with Ayton Castle awakening since the last century/millennium and winning the final of the Tweedmouth Kettle against Earlston in a close pair of games.
ACCC came through the hard way, with two games on January 5 and then two more on January 12. One of their skips had been quite young at the previous win.
Glendale came out tops in the Border Bonspiel, which seems to get earlier in the new year as time goes by. Mr and Mrs Colin Martin came through the field to win the open pairs in a tough game against James Lang and Ian McCreath.
St Boswells held an interesting Invitation Bonspiel last Saturday evening, involving four orthodox ends interspersed with an end played with cues (habitual cueists had to play with opposite hands), an end with no sweeping, an end with sweeping of opposition stones only, very tricky this one, and finally a silent end, which strained Tommy Hinnigan like never before.
This was all schemed up by president Andrew Kerr and Roddy McLean and was voted as worth doing again.
The rink’s three Canadian tourists, Jim Cullen, Harry Dodds and James Dixon, are well into their games now and the Scots are said to be shots up at the last hearing.
Ayton Castle and Chirnside Invitation bonspiels are due this week, while one or two Borders rinks are competing in the Yara event at Perth for most of this week.
