ABBOTSFORD

THE Border Computing Indoor League has been completed with the top two teams of Colin Hancock, Ecky Hancock and Tommy Mann Jnr meeting Ian Macdonald, Vic Graham and John Hardie to determine the winners.

The first game was the triples, with Hancock’s team off scratch and Macdonald’s off four. After a hard-fought battle, Macdonald’s triple emerged winners by 10 shots to nine.

In the singles match the following night the score was reversed, with Tommy Mann Jnr beating Macdonald by 10 shots to nine. Mann finished the indoor season unbeaten in the singles, with Macdonald only losing the one game.

The final crunch game was the pairs match between the father and son combination of Ecky and Colin Hancock and John Hardie and Vic Graham. The experience of the Hancocks proved decisive in the end and they ran away with the game by 18 shots to two, clinching top spot in the league.

Meanwhile, Gordon Bowers’s team, who were in third place, won their last three matches against John Purvesteam to finish second and relegate Macdonald’s team to third place.

The draws have been made for the handicapped singles and the pool tournament, with the first games starting this week.

The darts, dominoes and bowling night is on Saturday, January 26 commencing at 7pm.

TWEEDBANK

WITH the Christmas and New Year holidays over there was a return to league action for the seniors last week with a home match against Bainfield.

Unfortunately there was no improvement on their form and Bainfield took control early on. Only one Tweedbank rink managed to have any real success and finished with a draw while the other three rinks all lost.

The last league match for the seniors takes place this week after which the round robin phase of the Jock Brodie competition starts on Wednesday, January 23.

For the men, the last league match of the season will be on Saturday when they will entertain neighbours Teviotdale. With league success no longer a possibility, the match has little significance for either team however with the preliminary round of the Scottish Cup due to be played soon both teams will want to put on a good display.

Meanwhile, the national pairs for ladies and gents were played on January 5. Both pairs had a bye into the first round and for the ladies the opponents were Perth the venue being the West Lothian stadium in Livingstone. Tweedbank was represented by Bet Ritchie and Sue Davis. Perth won by 16 shots to 11.

For the men the venue was Bainfield, their opponents being Midlothian. Tweedbank was represented by Ross Nichol and Kenny Johnstone who played exceptionally well in this first match, beating the Midlothian pair quite comfortably by 23 shots to 13.

Their second round match was a very different affair. A bad start for them resulted in a lead of 13 shots to nil for their opponents, representing Stirling. After this they did get more into the match and the result was very close but they paid for the bad start losing by one shot only at 20-19.

At club level the new leagues have started or will be starting shortly. Draws have been made for the singles and Members should consult the notice boards to find out dates/times of matches.

Also coming up on Sunday is the preliminary round of the Scottish team championship. In this first match Tweedbank will face a team from Abbeyview the venue being the Midlothian stadium in Dalkeith. Team selections for this match will be on the Notice Board.
