WEDNESDAY, January 2, was the date for the annual “Icebreaker Run” for the Borders’ two biggest running clubs who traditionally put rivalry on hold for one day.
This year the social run started in Tweedbank and finished in the Royal Burgh of Lauder.
The green and white of Gala Harriers ran side by side with the royal blue and yellow of Lauderdale Limpers, with discussions of targets and goals for 2013 the main topic of conversation.
For athletes taking the 13-mile, 10-mile, 6-mile or 4-mile options, there was a mud aplenty on the route which took them over the heights and through the stunning scenery of the Southern Upland Way, until a welcome descent to the finish where a welcoming odour of bacon rolls inspired some tired legs on to the hospitality of the Lauderdale Hotel, which again treated the runners to excellent refreshments and a warm reception.
Thanks go to Graeme Sutherland (Lauderdale) and Fiona Shepherd (Gala) for organising such a great start to 2013. Running is a great way to tone up after the excesses of the Christmas period. Please contact either club for details of how to become involved.
