IN THE days leading up to Christmas, the Agrii Border curling league results saw some interesting changes of fortune, writes Alistair Lindsay.
Swinton won 6-2 against the mean Greenlaw machine, Chirnside notched up an 8-6 victory over Ayton Castle, Selkirk peeled 7-7 with Coldstream to put their first point on the table, and Duns dinged Roxburghe 8-6.
The Past Presidents’ fixture occupied a very entertaining two sessions on December 21 and this took shape by being played in the Rhymers’ Reel format, created by Cullen and executed by Billy Byers.
Six past-presidents attended with rinks, and Billy Byers and David Kerr skipped the remaining two rinks as de facto P-Ps. When the final number crunching was settled, Ian Dykes’ rink emerged as winners by not very much.
Dykes is something of a serial winner in this event having played in it since the very early days.
This time he had to control debutant Dave Brown as well as Dave Prentice, with Rob Fortune as a steadying lead.
By the time this makes print, the Family Bonspiel results will be known and the opening round of the Tweedmouth Kettle will be upon us. A good New Year to the faithful readers and all curlers.
