RBS RESERVE LEAGUE NATIONAL ONE

AN experienced Ayr side gained revenge for defeat at Selkirk earlier in the season with a six-try win over the relegation-threatened Philiphaugh men.

Selkirk A started with Josh Welsh in the backline, the teenager’s first appearance since being injured with the first XV against Kelso in August.

Captain Craig MacDougall continued at fly half in the absence of Callum McColm, but his side were under pressure from kick-off and conceded a try on five minutes.

The home side’s impressive centre Michael Beckwith was causing plenty of problems and on the half-hour mark, he scored between the posts to stretch Ayr’s lead.

But Selkirk remained in the game, and Welsh’s two penalties meant they only trailed 15-6 at the break.

The Souters’ resistance was finally ended in the second half, as the west coast side ran in four tries, with the home pack taking control of the set-piece.

Selkirk kept battling and managed to grab a consolation try on 60 minutes through substitute Willie McClymont.

The ball was moved to winger Kieran Monks, and when the teenager was stopped just short of the line, McClymont quickly secured possession to dive over.

Welsh’s conversion sailed over to complete Selkirk’s scoring.

The result leaves Ayr in second and Selkirk second bottom, six points adrift of Currie 2nds.

Selkirk: S. Bell, K. Monks, L. McLennan, A. Given, J. Welsh, C. MacDougall, S. Tough; B. Reid, N. Wielbo, C. Henderson, K. Mitchell, E. Turner, S. Nixon, R. Wilson, M. Robertson. Subs: J. Turnbull, W. McClymont, J. Bett, M. Waldron.
