AS PART of the Vision 2014 plan for the year of sport 2012, Active Schools Hawick and Hawick Junior Badminton Club offered every P7 pupil in the Hawick and District area the opportunity to get to grips with the shuttle.

The children were introduced to the sport before trying out some games and having loads of fun into the bargain.

On the day, the youngsters had the opportunity to sample five different skill stations such as: fitness challenge, target practice and beat the pro, as well as having the opportunity to take in an exhibition match featuring some of the Borders’ best junior and adult players.

Pupils from seven schools in the area were represented with one session in the morning and a second session in the afternoon.

Local coaches Colin Blaikie and Harry Turnbull thanked Scott Renwick, the head of PE at Hawick High School, for the use of the main games hall; Paul Scott, the active schools co-ordinator, for his help in organising the event and liaison with the schools; the sports leaders from Hawick High School; badminton players and coaches from the Borders Badminton Group; and all the teachers who helped on the day to make the festival such a great experience for the youngsters.
