Hawick Legion 1
Newtown 2
BEVERIDGE CUP FIRST ROUND
A goal two minutes from time booked Newtown a place in the second round.
Legion had the better of the opening exchanges and after Liam Gellaitry had headed an Andrew Maltman free kick wide, Scott Duncan almost notched an opener with a dipping shot.
Following a spell that produced few goalmouth incidents, Newtown sailed ahead in the 29th minute when Neil McIvor turned home a Matty Scott free kick.
Within four minutes, Legion drew level – Chris Brown producing the scoring touch, finding the net with a header from a Gellaitry throw-in.
Early in the second period, Newtown keeper Gareth Weatherstone robbed Legion of a second with a fine save from Maltman. Newtown began to gain the edge following this and after a Paul Scott throw-in, Russell Hunter went close to netting with a well-struck shot.
There were few scoring opportunities, though, and with the minutes ticking away, extra time appeared to be on the cards.
Two minutes from time, Newtown changed all this as sub Neil Laidlaw whipped a cross over from the right which was struck away by McIvor for a dramatic winner.
