FITTINGLY, Sunday’s Aussie Pairs competition, held at Earlston Bowling Club, was played out in brilliant sunshine, apart from one short, sharp shower that had the large contingent of competitors running for their raincoats.

By the time the players had returned from the changing rooms, however, the clouds had dispersed again and the antipodean antics continued with the Bruces and Sheilas enjoying some bonzer bowling down at the club.

Following some hard-fought ties, the final arrived with Anne Black and Bill Peffers taking on whistling greenkeeper George Moffat and his sidekick for the day, Malcolm Scott. Black and Peffers appeared to be cruising and were two shots clear going into the last end. Moffat and Scott fought back, however, and managed to draw the two shots needed to tie the scores, resulting in a dramatic sudden-death extra end.

With his first bowl, Moffat sat right on the jack and with Scott adding some fine bowls of his own, it looked to be all over. Peffers however, returning from injury, had other ideas and blew the head to pieces, leaving the jack exposed once more. Scott drew the shot with his final bowl, though, and, despite Moffat and Black still having two bowls each to play, the shot remained, leaving Moffat and Scott to lift the trophy.

Earlston are holding their closing day Rinks Cup tournament on Saturday, September 29. A good turnout of members would be much appreciated on the final day.
