WOOLER

AT their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,632 lambs and 207 ewes.

Lamb numbers lighter due to show six day rule, all classes easier on the week with leaner types proving difficult to cash.

ST BOSWELLS

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 51 clean cattle, 57 OTM cattle, 2,224 new season lambs and 1,141 ewes.

Bullocks (27) averaged 215p per kg (-0.6p on the week) while heifers (21) averaged 224.8p per kg (+7.8p on the week). Three young bulls averaged 193.9p per kg (+9.9p on the week) and 57 beef type OTM cattle averaged 143.1p per kg (+1.5p on the week).

The 2,224 new season lambs averaged 177.8p per kg (-5.6p on the week) and 1,141 ewes averaged £60.43 (-£3.89 on the week).

LONGTOWN

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 58 prime cattle, 11 young bulls, 36 over 30 month cattle, 4,189 prime lambs and 7,240 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

Prime cattle saw a shortage of fed cattle, but a full ring of 12 active buyers ensured a good trade throughout.

Top price to 219.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by J. Bell, Brydekirk Mains, purchased by W. Kirkup and Sons, Butchers, Longtown. Top price bullock to 212.5p for a Limousin from J.F. and I. Armstrong, Nether Onsett.

Prime bulls maintain late high rates, topping at 207.5p (twice) for Limousins from Mr J. Jardine, Yett Farm and from G.J.A. Rome and Co, Niven Hill.

The 36 OTM cattle saw a lot of weathered feeding cows on offer which saw the sale topped at 187.5p for Galloways from J. Robertson and Son, Becks Farm.

A smaller show of 4,189 prime lambs were a mixed trade this week with a big difference between lambs with flesh and lean lambs, good lambs regularly sold between 190p and 200p but leaner lambs were little more than store price. The sale averaged 181p per kilo, also a large number of lightweight lambs were forward, reflecting in the average.

A similar show of 1,182 lightweight lambs saw smaller Swaledale and English Mule lambs little more than store price if lacking flesh. A larger entry of 7,240 cast ewes and rams attracted the usual ring of buyers with trade being £4 to £6 up on the week, with a very good show of ewes for quality forward. Good selling Continental ewes remain easily sold and rams constantly short of buyers requirements.

BORDER LIVESTOCK

LAST week Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 86 prime cattle including 32 cows, 2,291 prime lambs and 3,015 store and breeding sheep.

Prime cattle were dearer again with numbers tightening. Aberdeen Angus steers from Eastfield of Lempitlaw, Kelso, sold to 390p per kg to Well Hung and Tender, Berwick. Butcher weight Continental cross heifers from Fenwick Steads, Belford, sold to 370p per kg. Other Continental crosses from Cresswell Farms, Belford, to 360p per kg. Holstein young bulls to 325p per kg flat rate.

Lamb trade also firmed with well fleshed lambs in short supply. Suffolk cross and Texel cross medium weights sold to 430p per kg from Raecleugh Head, Duns, Sharplaw, Hownam, and Tughall Grange, Chathill. Export weights to 425p per kg and £89.25 from Over Howden, Oxton.

In the store and breeding sheep section the company saw an unprecedented demand for both store and breeding sheep selling over 3,000 head. Short keep store lambs looked good value to the buyer while longer keeping Lambs were similar to the high prices of last year. Cheviot hill lambs sold to £60.
