FIVE members of the Fjordhus Reivers women’s hockey squad helped their country to a fourth-place finish in the Masters World Cup.
Played in Canterbury, Kent, Jackie Wilson of Hawick, Melrose’s Denise Fairbairn, Elena Lunn of Galashiels, Duns’ Carolyn Allison and captain Janet Jack from Ancrum performed admirably for Scotland’s ladies 40s team.
But the men’s 45s squad, containing Colin Stockdale and Paul Conkie, were disappointed to end up sixth in their league table.
The ladies, managed by another Fjordhus Reivers member, Pippa Bell, started off with a 2-1 loss to eventual champions New Zealand.
Next up was Wales, and Scotland recorded a 4-1 win in 36 degree heat before the Scots thumped South Africa 4-0.
A 2-1 loss to Australia, before a 4-2 defeat of Ireland, set up a finale against the Auld Enemy.
Unfortunately, five games in six days took its toll on the Scots, and the English ladies triumphed 4-0.
Jack finished the tournament’s top scorer with six goals.
In a tough group for the men’s 45s, the Scots drew 3-3 with Wales before a 3-1 defeat to New Zealand.
However, a 3-2 win against Germany meant the men had a chance of a semi-final spot.
But the Germans’ win over the Kiwi’s meant they progressed to the last four, while Scotland went on to lose a play-off with England.
Jack said: “The Fjordhus Reivers players will benefit hugely from the tournament and this will stand them in good stead for the coming season.”
