AN Ettrick Valley school has received a glowing report from government inspectors.

Kirkhope primary was praised by HM inspector Janie McManus for its high calibre of staff and quality of learning and teaching after her team’s visit in May.

As a result no follow-up inspections will be needed at the Ettrickbridge school which has around 30 pupils, as well as a nursery class.

Ms McManus noted the school gaining its fourth green flag from Eco-Schools Scotland and discussed the children’s confidence in learning.

The inspector also said staff work as a team to support the pupils and create a positive ethos throughout the school.

Ms McManus acknowledged the teachers use of the new national learning system, Curriculum for Excellence, as well as head teacher Mo Brown’s leadership. However, further developing approaches to assessing and recording children’s progress in the nursery was recommended.

Welcoming the report, Mrs Brown added: “Priorities identified in our school improvement plan were also endorsed.

“We are therefore looking forward to continuing with our planned developments and taking forward recommendations received during the inspection.”

Parent council chair Ruth Scott said: “As a parent I have always believed that Kirkhope primary is a good school, which is why I have chosen to send my daughter there.

“However, it is very reassuring for everyone concerned to have received such an excellent report after a thorough inspection by Her Majesty’s inspectors.

“Every single member of staff is to be congratulated for their hard work and dedication,” she added.
