POLICE have confirmed the death of a 57-year-old Canadian woman after a two-car road accident in the western Borders.

The crash, involving a northbound Dodge Caliber and a southbound Peugeot 5008, occurred at 1.20pm yesterday (Wednesday) on the A701, a mile south west of the unclassified Tweedsmuir to Talla Road. The road was closed for five hours while investigations took place.

The dead woman – named as Murielle Joanisse Vaillani of Gatineau in Quebec – was a passenger in the Peugeot. She died at the scene. Her 59-year-old husband was taken to the Edinburgh Royal Infirmary suffering from shock.

The 39-year-old male driver of the Dodge was also taken to the same hospital having sustained numerous fractures and other injuries. His condition is described as “stable”.

Police have appealed for witnesses and particularly want to speak to two female motorcyclists who stopped to assist at the scene until the emergency services arrived.

“Both motorcycles had foreign plates and we want both women, or anyone with information regarding their movements after they left the scene, to get in touch to assist with our enquiries,” said a police spokesman.
