THE two most successful clubs in the Borders, Gala and Melrose, locked horns at 2nd XV level for the Borders 2nd XV Cup last Wednesday night and it was Melrose Storm who took the title by 23- 17.
In the driving rain the match was very close with Melrose coming from behind to take the title. Gala started well going 12-0 up thanks to a couple of tries from Richie Todd and Ian Ross, the first converted by Lewis Playfair, but back came Melrose Storm with a Robbie Shirra-Gibb try converted by Donald Crawford to reduce the deficit at half time two five points.
After the break three Donald Crawford penalties gave Melrose a four point advantage before Ian Ross scored his second try to regain the lead. The last word went to Melrose. Skipper David Crawford scored a try converted by namesake Donald, and that proved decisive.
