GALASHIELS
THE new season is nearly here and the club will have the opening day on Saturday 21 April 2012.
A good turn out of members would be appreciated and for catering purposes those members intending to come should add their names to the list on the notice board.
The club would welcome new members and anyone interested in joining can find out more information by contacting the secretary on 01896 750601.
For existing members, lists are on the notice board requesting names of anyone interested in playing in the evening leagues and also seniors willing to play in the Tuesday morning triples league. The first match is the warm-up game against Melrose towards the end of April.
Early entries are also required for the club singles championship in order that the draw can be made as soon as possible.
TWEEDBANK
WITH a week to go before the indoor season finishes, club finals are coming thick and fast.
The gents’ singles was a repeat of the final for 2010/11 between Ian Crawford and Kenny Johnstone.
In a close match, the score moved to 17 shots to 15 for Johnstone before three crucial ends went in his favour. He needed just another single for the match but lost two shots on the next end before gaining the shot needed when a weighted bowl from Crawford narrowly failed to produce the desired result.
In the ladies’ final, Christine Miller played Gail Lindores. In another closely contested match, Miller was ahead at 15 shots to 13 before a count of three saw Lindores gain the lead. Four shots in two ends then left Miller just two shots away from victory with Lindores, needing a full house. The latter gained the necessary shots in the next end to win by 21 shots to 19.
In the junior singles, Ben McGregor faced Andrew Hancock. With the score at 17 shots to 7, McGregor needed just four shots for victory and two singles took him nearer the winning post. Hancock gained another single but then two shots for McGregor sealed the match.
The last of the singles finals was between David Miller and Rob Johnstone in the seniors. This was a close game in the early stages and the score reached 10 shots to 9 in favour of Miller. He then surged ahead with seven shots in four ends and, although he then lost a count of three, four singles in the space of five ends were enough for a win by 21 shots to 13.
The other final played last week was the senior triples in which Paul Butterfield, Tommy Mann Snr and Danny McLean played Angus Tait, John Skinner and Mike Dillon. A run of seven shots in three ends put McLean’s team 12 shots to 8 in front with five ends to play. Dillon managed to keep the gap at just two shots with two ends left but McLean’s triple proved too strong, winning by 16 shots to 11.
The remaining two finals are the gents’ and ladies’ triples which will be played today and tomorrow respectively. Tomorrow is also the last day of the season which will finish with a bowls match at 7pm followed by a buffet supper and the presentation of prizes.
There is still time to add names to the list for the bowls and any members coming for the buffet and prize-giving only should also add their names to a separate list.
