Rye House Rockets 58-37 Berwick Bandits

Just 24 hours after beating Rye House at Shielfield, Berwick went down to a 21-point defeat against the Rockets at Hoddesdon on Sunday.

On this occasion it was the Bandits who were made to look second best, their only two race wins coming from Claus Vissing, on a double pointed tactical ride, and Steen Jensen, who was the only visiting rider to lower the colours of home number one Edward Kennett, who raced to a 17-point haul.

Jensen (7+1) was also the only Bandit to beat Steve Boxall (15+1), the Dane relegating him to third place in heat 15 after he had gone unbeaten in his first five outings.

And with Jason Garrity, who missed the meeting between the clubs the previous evening, weighing in with three paid wins, the Rockets quickly avenged their heavy defeat in the Borders.

After a first race 3-3, Berwick fell behind to a 4-2 in heat two, and after that the Hertfordshire club were never headed.

Two 5-1s in heats three and five put them 20-10 in front and after that it was all Berwick could do to hang onto the coat-tails, despite Kevin Doolan top-scoring for the visitors on 11+1, which included four points as a double-pointed tactical.

Berwick: Vissing 8, Bellego 2+1, Jensen 7+1, Doolan 11+1, Edberg 3+1, Kus 6.

Sheep rustling is alive and well in Newtown St Boswells.

Owner of the village’s Tweedside Gallery, owner Ian Oliver said: “I fixed a Art Trail sheep very similar to this one, with cable ties, to the railings opposite the Council HQ yesterday (Monday) morning, and by tea time it was gone. It was not doing any harm, it was in the same place as many banners have been over the last wee while.

“These sheep are owned by Crossing Borders http://crossing-borders.org.uk/ and have been an integral part of our promotion for about five years now, and I’d like to have it back, please. I did not even have a chance to take its picture!”

If anyone knows of the sign’s whereabouts, can they contact Ian at Tweedside Gallery, Tweedside Road, Newtown St Boswells or call 01835 823473.

School hit by damning report

Poor rates of progress in literacy and maths have been identified at a local school, with the headteacher said not to have a ‘clear vision’.

The damning HM Inspectorate of Education(HMIe) report into West Linton Primary School was published on Tuesday.

Inspector Susan Gow rated the school ‘unsatisfactory’ in three areas, weak in another four, and only adequate or satisfactory in the remaining five areas she assessed.

In her report, Ms Gow said: “Children are not making sufficient progress in developing literacy skills. The rate of progress is too slow.”

She had similar comments to make regarding numeracy, although acknowledged that the school was already attempting to address these issues.

However, Ms Gow later added: “The headteacher does not have a clear vision for the school... The school would benefit greatly from more effective leadership and ambition for its children.”

Responding to the inspector’s report, depute chief executive for the council, Jeanette McDiarmid, said: “This is a very disappointing inspection result.

“I would like to reassure parents and the wider community that every effort is being made to make significant improvements in the areas identified.”

The chairman of the school’s parent council, Tristan Compton, added: “This report highlights significant failings in the quality of education, which must now be addressed.

“With the support of the council this school has the potential to be excellent and the parent council is looking forward to working with the school in the coming months to achieve the improvements that are needed.”

The inspection report, published after Ms Gow’s visit to the school before the summer holidays, highlighted that pupils are articulate, polite and very well behaved, and that the new school building has the potential to help children’s learning.

However Ms Gow called for improved leadership and communication, and has urged the teachers to challenge pupils more, as well as improving the curriculum and ensuring greater involvement of parents and the wider community.

Along with the inspection, a survey of teachers, pupils and parents was carried out by HMIe.

This found that 68 per cent of teaching staff disagreed that the leadership of the school at all levels was effective, with more than half also saying they were not involved with setting priorities to improve the school.

Ms Gow concluded: “As a result of our inspection findings we think that the school and nursery needs additional support and more time to make necessary improvements.

“Our area lead officer will work with Scottish Borders Council to build capacity for improvement, and will maintain contact to monitor progress.”

A further inspection of the school will be carried out within the next year.

Peterborough 52-38 Berwick Bandits

Berwick were denied any joy from their trip to Peterborough on Tuesday when the Panthers hit them with a late surge.

The Bandits had been in contention throughout the meeting, four wins from in-form reserve Matej Kus helping to keep the score close at 37-35 with only three races remaining.

But the Panthers pounced at the end to deny The Borderers the chance of victory, or for that matter a losing bonus point.

The home side finished with a flourish, recording 5-1s in heats 13, 14 and 15 to ensure Berwick left the East of England Showground with nothing to show for their efforts.

Lasse Bjerre (13+1) and Ales Dryml (12+2) each dropped only one point for Peterborough, with Ulrich Ostergaard winning three of his four starts.

For Berwick, David Bellego (9+1) and Kevin Doolan (8) each won a race, with Kus top-scoring on 13.

Team manager John Anderson said: “We just fell short at theend, but again showed we are a team capable of pushing a lot of sides on their own track.”

* Berwick Speedway will utilise their final midweek rain off date on Wednesday, September 10 against Workington Comets with a 7.30pm start.

This was an early season call off at just after 7pm on May 24. With both clubs racing on a Saturday it has proved difficult to fit it in.

Berwick are planning a special cut price deal for this meeting (more details next week).

longtown

The Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart plc had forward 17 prime cattle, 16 over 30 month cattle, 2,182 prime lambs and 5,254 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A plainer show of prime cattle presented and many more are required to keep up with the ever increasing demand. Top price to 221.5p for Limousin heifers shown by A. and W.J. Taylor and Son, Dashwellgreen, purchased by Border Meats, Butchers, Lockerbie. Limousin bullocks sold to 220.5p also from Messrs Taylor, this time purchased by Mr John Little.

A plainer show of cast cows saw fleshy farm assured cows sell to a good trade and topped at 146.5p for a Luing from J.G. Murray and Son, Branxholm Braes.

Prime lambs were a smaller show, owing to the decline in the trade plus farmers harvesting and silaging the last few days. However, trade was buoyant with all weights up 10p per kilo to average 174p overall. Top price per kilo was 210p for Texels from Lanerton and to £93.50 per head for Texels from Mill View and Ormiston.

Light lambs also enjoyed the uplift in price to a top of £67.50 per head and 193p per kilo for Texels from Greenwell Meadows.

Prime ewes and rams were a smaller entry but nevertheless trade was just as dear as ever with the large company of buyers keen for supplies.

Rams sold to £200 for Suffolks and Texels from Guards Mill.

Sheep entries are up for Westruther

Peeblesshire farmer Andrew Warnock of Dreva Farm, Broughton, will be judging the best sheep in show at Westruther on Saturday.

Sheep entries are up this year, with around 190 expected on the showground at Whiteknowes, behind the village hall. The show will hold its second pet show, following last year’s inaugural success.

Otherwise organisers expect overseas competitors - in Scotland for the Tain-based international trials early next month - to compete at the show’s open sheepdog trials starting at 9am at Westruther Mains. The judge is last year’s winner, Ross Henderson of Windydoors, Galashiels.

Three new cups are being awarded this year: one from the McDougal family, dating back to 1910 when it was awarded for the best home breed ewe lamb, which this year, will go to the multibreed section; Morag Cunningham has donated a cup for the best young handler and the Watson trophy, in memory of Greenlaw trialer Tam Watson, has been gifted to the trials for the best pen.

There will be a bar, refreshments and Langshaws ice cream in the village hall and judging starts at 10.30am

Meanwhile the Upper Teviotdale Pastoral Society’s annual trial takes place on Sunday (August 31) at Whitchesters Farm, just south of Hawick. A spokesperson said: “Last year there were 50 competitors and it looks like being another strong entry again this year with enquiries coming in from as far afield as Germany and Switzerland.” The judge is Chris Smart, spectators are welcome and the first run is at 8 am.

Independence would bring a ‘fairer’ future for farming claim slammed as ‘desperate fantasy’

$

Local MSPs are set to take part in more public debates as the Referendum approaches.

South of Scotland SNP MSP Paul Wheelhouse will speak at a farmers’ union-organised debate at Lanark mart on Wednesday (August 27).

And yesterday (Wednesday, August 20) he criticised the UK Government over their handling of the Common Agricultural Policy (CAP) reform, saying it negotiated Scotland to the bottom of the funding league tables for both direct payments to farmers and rural development funding for diversification and other rural businesses.

He said: “If Scotland had already been independent when the last round of CAP talks took place, our farmers could have benefited to the tune of up to €3.5 billion in additional European funding. Instead Westminster handed Scotland’s farmers and crofters the worst deal in Europe with the lowest direct payments per hectare in the EU.

“We need the ability to negotiate our own deal in Europe, to get a fairer settlement,”

Ettrick, Roxburgh and Berwickshire Scottish Conservative MSP John Lamont, who will take part in the ITV Border referendum debate in Hawick on September 8, said: “This is more desperate fantasy from the SNP.

“If farmers across Scotland feel this way, why did 16 senior figures in the NFU last week speak out in favour of a No vote?

“The biggest risk to farms is a Yes vote, which would lead to Scotland facing reapplication to the EU.

“That could take years, and may not even be sanctioned at all, which would be a financial catastrophe for farming and rural affairs.”

Street assault sees 19-year-old given 80 hours unpaid work

A 19-year-old Galashiels youth who assaulted a boy aged 14 in the street was ordered to carry out 80 hours’ unpaid work as a direct alternative to custody.

Ryan Scott, of Laurel Grove, punched the youngster in the face because
he thought he had made a comment about him – but later admitted he could be wrong.

Tessa Bradley, prosecuting at Selkirk Sheriff Court on Monday, said the incident happened in Market Square, Galashiels, at around 9.30pm on March 7 when it was dark, but the area was well lit.

She said: “The complainer and three friends were in Galashiels town centre and were walking through Market Square where they stopped for a short time.

“The accused was with a group of friends and initially he spoke to another member of the other group.

He then turned his attention to the 14-year-old and challenged him about his actions on a previous occasion about a comment.

He started berating him and he swung a punch, striking him on the left-hand side of the face.

“The victim and his friends fled to a nearby takeaway and contacted his mother and another member of the group called the police.”

The court was told that the youngster did not have appear to have any injury, apart from redness to the face.

Ms Bradley said the accused was found nearby by police and claimed he had nothing to do with the incident. However, when cautioned and charged at Galashiels police station, Scott replied: “I did it.”

Defending, Ross Dow said: “There is not a lot I can say. He thought the complainer was responsible for a comment, but for what it is worth he may have got the wrong person.”

Mixed fortunes for Lowland League sides in midweek matches

Gala Fairydean Rovers 3

Whitehill Welfare 3

Lowland League

Gala Fairydean Rovers halted a run of two successive home losses thanks to an injury time goal by substitute Ashley Langford at Netherdale on Wednesday night, writes Kenny Paterson.

In a thrilling match, Gala seemed destined for defeat after Whitehill Welfare striker Aaron Somerville had scored what had appeared to be the winner on 81 minutes, only for Langford to slam the ball home in the third minute of injury time.

In an end to end game which was a great advert for the Lowland League, Gala should have opened the scoring on five minutes only for Dean McColm to fire a shot straight at Welfare keeper Bryan Young.

Somerville failed to find the net from six yards out with no keeper to beat but the striker made amends with a thumping header past John Dodds on 20 minutes.

Craig McBride hit the bar with a header soon after and McColm fired wide again, but McColm found the net with a left foot shot beyond Young eight minutes before half time.

Gala went in front on 47 minutes as the impressive Lee Stephen swung in the perfect cross for Daryl Devlin to head in for a deserved goal.

But the lead only last until the hour when referee Ralph Gordon judged Whitehill’s Kerr Dodds to have been fouled in a penalty box stramash and gave a spot kick. Wayne McIntosh’s effort was saved by Dodds, but McIntosh fire in the rebound for his ninth goal of the season.

Former Vale man Somerville squeezed a shot into the net to put Welfare 3-2 up, but in a last gasp effort, Jamie Gibson’s shot struck the post and Langford fired home to send Netherdale into raptures.

Gala Fairydean Rovers: J. Dodds, L. Stephen, C. McBride, P. Hossack, A. Cosgrove, B. Miller, R. Aitchison, D. Devlin, J. Gibson, D. McColm (A. Langford 86), D. Bonnar (K. Lough 77).

Edinburgh City 3-0 Selkirk

Selkirk suffered their first defeat of the season against their bogey team, and Garry O’Connor was sent off a minute from time.

Goals from Ross Guthrie, John Dunn and Ross Allum were enough to end the Souters’ streak.

Stirling University 1-3 Vale of Leithen

Vale continued their return to form with a rousing 3-1 victory at Stirling.

Berwickshire athlete Cameron Tindle (15) led the way at Aberdeen over the weekend in the Scottish Age Group Athletics Championships.

Running in the under-17 category, Tindle flew to a superb 100m and 200m double gold victory, in 10.72 seconds and 22.03 seconds respectively.

Also on the track, Selkirk’s Zaynah Aziz grabbed bronze in the under-15 800m – and it could have been even better.

The Souter was involved in a three-way sprint finish with eventual winner Iona Crawford of Pitreavie and Edinburgh’s Carolyn Cameron, who finished second.

Stephen Nisbet, Zaynah’s coach at Selkirk Track and Field, said: “She was delighted with her medal, as was I. It proves that hard work and determination does pay off.”

And Chirnside’s Rory Williams finished second in the under-13 800m, ahead of Chasers team-mates Josh Abbot (fourth) and Jamie Kinghorn (eighth) – a great boost to the club having three participants in the final.

There were great performances in the field competitions as well.

Jordan Charters from Dolphinton won the under-20 long jump with a 6.73m leap.

And Adam Leighton of TLJT took silver in the under-13 high jump, clearing 1.45m – a great result for the 11-year-old.

More results from Aberdeen are on www.scottishathletics.org.uk.

Bowling

Abbotsford

The B team travelled to play Kelso B in the Knockout Plate, but were defeated 63-51. Stuart Aitchison skipped the highest-up rink for Abbotsford.

On Tuesday the seniors travelled to play Buccleuch. There were narrow wins for two triples, but the overall score was 65-40 in favour of their hosts.

On Wednesday, the A team played a Knockout Cup quarter-final tie away to Hawick, the hosts winning comfortably by 92-55. Tommy Mann Jnr skipped the only winning rink for Abbotsford.

Also on Wednesday, at home, the B team played a rearranged league fixture against Hawick B and lost by 77-57.

On Saturday, two rinks from Abbotsford played in the Border Championships at Berwick. The rink of Alan Howlieson, John Purves, Gordon Bowers and Tommy Newall (skip) had qualified on Tuesday when they defeated a rink from Wilton.

The other rink of Iain Macdonald, Graham Prentice, John Manczak and Colin Hancock (skip) had qualified previously, but for the finals day, Brian Anderson substituted for Manczak.

The draw for the semi-finals kept the two rinks apart, with Hancock’s rink playing a rink from Spittal and Newall’s rink playing Tweedmouth. Both matches were closely fought throughout, but it was Spittal and president Tommy Newall’s rink that progressed. In the final, the Abbotsford rink was never behind and in the last third pulled away for a 20-9 victory to lift the Sir Thomas Henderson Shield.

Also on Saturday, Liz Waugh played in the Champion of Champions semi-final against Laura Lightbody from Jedburgh, but lost by 21-17.

On Sunday, club members competed for the Wolfson Trophy. In the round-robin stage, John Skinner, Bill Waugh and Keith Campbell won section 1, while Rob Simpson, Taylor Johnston and Craig Riddell took section two. In the final, Riddell’s triple won the opening triples game 4-3, so only needed one more win from the singles or pairs.

In the singles, Riddell lost to Campbell by 9-7, but the duo of Simpson and Johnston won by 6-4 to clinch the trophy.

BBA

The Border Bowling Association finals were held on Saturday at Berwick Bowling Club.

The day started bright, but breezy, and the bowling was to the usual high standard.

A considerable amount of spectators enjoyed a good day’s bowling and some fine weather, apart from a heavy shower during the finals.

Results – Junior Singles: S. Brown (Kelso) beat David Tait (Stow) 21-19. Singles: Stuart Bebbington (Ayton) beat Alistair White (Kelso) 21-18. Pairs: Craig Martin and Kevin Donaldson (Gordon) beat Alan Brady and John Smyth (Wilton) 22-7. Triples: Ian Ford, Mick Hogg and Euan McGregor (Hawick) beat Ross Nichol, Neill McNally and Lee Haldane (Melrose) 16-14. Fours: Ian McDonald, Graeme Prentice, John Manczak and Colin Hancock (Abbotsford 1) beat Eddie Smith, Donald Wilkinson, Paul Copland and David Kerr (Spittal) 20-9. On Tuesday, the Seniors played their counterparts from Jed, losing 62-45.

On Wednesday, the A team met Abbotsford in the Knockout Cup and had an emphatic victory by 92-55. Top rink for the Hawick side was the L. Clarkson-skipped rink, supported by A. Oliver; A. Wilson; and K. Ford.

The B team hit the road to play Abbotsford B team in a rearranged league match and enjoyed a comfortable victory by 77-55. Top rink was the T. Anderson-skipped one of D. Johnstone, C. Logan and B. Wear.

On Saturday, the Seniors’ Four and the Gents’ Triple made the journey to Berwick to play in the Borders Play-0ffs. The Seniors – W. Wells, J.H. Reilly, B. McDonald and G. Lyall – were beaten 17-11 by Berwick. The triple of I. Ford, M. Hogg & E. McGregor, however, came away as 2014 champions, beating a very good Melrose team in the final by 16-14. All three played superb bowls in the final.

Sunday saw 16 pairs contest the Alan Barker Trophy. The final saw E. McGregor & Z. Borthwick overcame F. Willison & A. Wilson.

Langholm

Ian Scott from the host club retained the trophy at the Langholm New Town bowling club single-handed tournament last Saturday, which had 20 entries. In a keenly-fought final, he defeated Steven Barker.

Jake Reid went out in the semi-finals to the eventual winner and Avril Grieve was also knocked out at that stage. The tournament was sponsored by Duncan Ritchie, who presented the winner with his trophy.

Newtown

The club hosted its Ladies Triples competition, with Newtown – Winnie Milligan, Helen Redburn and Marie Todd – beating Melrose in the final.

The club would like to thank everyone for their support.

Curling

Auld Yins League

With a dynamic and relatively youthful committee at the helm of the Auld Yins League for the coming season, the prospects for a fuller competition look very promising.

Some 13 teams are shaping up to be in contention, an increase of two on last season.

The current selection of curlers available indicates that a”wide rinnin’ dug” has worked well with a flock ranging from Teviotdale to the Tweed valley, the Lammermuirs, the East Coast and Glendale; and that’s the perimeter, without including the “inbye getherin”.

It now remains for non-participating players, and retirees, to come to witness these games throughout the season.

From Glendale comes an update on that worthy club’s administration, with Debbie Higgins presiding, Andrew Reed at her right hand, Candice Bell as secretary, and Caroline Cumming treasurer. The Northumbrians gently came into view late on in the Agrii Border League to serve up a last-stone win in the final, while lifting the Border Bonspiel was icing on the cake.

Peebles rider Scott Brash claimed victory in the Horse Guards Parade, London, in round 11 of the Global Champions Tour last week – earning £120,000 in the process.

The world number one beat four-time Germany legend Ludger Beerbaum in a jump-off.

Brash, 28, lies in sixth place in the GCT leaderboard with three events left, chasing leader Sweden’s Rolf-Goran Bengtsson.

However, the big London pay packet keeps Brash at the top of the season’s prize money league at just under £500,000.

He is in the GB squad ahead of next month’s World Equestrian Games in Normandy.

Berwick Bandits 37

The small and slick Hoddesdon track of the Rye House Rockets has been a constant enigma for Berwick Bandits over the last four decades, but it soon became apparent that Sunday afternoon’s episode was not to be a classic one.

Team manager John Anderson said: “It may have been a sizeable defeat for us tonight, but at least there were plenty moments where we were competitive and looked like we were trying to get some good points.”

Easton’s hunt for top-six place washed down Cadwell drain

Hawick superbike star Stuart Easton did not have the weekend he was hoping for in the eighth round of the British superbike championship at Cadwell Park, Lincolnshire, writes John Mushet.

The Rapid Solicitor’s Kawasaki rider knew that he had this round and the next at Donington Park in September to make the top six for the title showdown.

Easton only managed 14th place on the grid in the three-stage qualifying round on Sunday in near-perfect conditions – not in the position he wanted to be in.

In race one on Monday, he moved into ninth place and remained there when rain began to fall and the race was red-flagged due to the track becoming dangerous – the riders were on slick tyres for the dry conditions at the start of the race.

It did put Easton further up the grid, into ninth place, for the day’s second race.

But the weather took a turn for the worse with torrential rain, which was getting heavier throughout the day, making the track conditions treacherous.

With lots of spray and a very greasy track, Easton’s machine went backwards.

When he was in 12th place on lap seven he pulled into the pit lane with a mechanical problem, all but ending his fight for that top-six place.

He is now 34 points adrift of sixth-place contender Chris Walker.

A disappointed Easton was hoping that he could have made up the difference, but now knows he will be contesting the cup competition for the riders who finish in seventh place and above.

The next round at Donington is in two weeks’ time.

Kirstin makes good start to GB’s campaign, but loses way

Jedburgh athlete Kirstin Maxwell had mixed fortunes at the World Universities Orienteering Championships in the Czech Republic.

She ran the first leg for the Great Britain team in the Sprint Relay, helping the side to a superb seventh place, nine seconds ahead of Finland and just 16 seconds down from a podium place.

Kirstin coped well with the pressure of running the first leg in a mass start with some of the world’s best orienteers and in front of the Eurosport TV cameras.

The individual sprint race two days later, however, was not on the type of terrain that the British runners had prepared for and didn’t go to according to plan, with a navigational error on the long leg costing Kirstin valuable time. A good run through the final controls, however, pulled her back up to a respectable 42nd position and second of the British athletes.

Kirstin’s final race of the week was in the Forest Relays on Saturday, where neither of the women’s teams excelled, but the experienced Great Britain men achieved the side’s best result of the week by finishing in fourth.
