Pupils at Galashiels Academy are benefiting from a brand new service helping them to plan their careers.

Fourth year students Catherine MacKenzie and Heather Dunlop last week gave the website My World of Work the thumbs up after trying it out with her careers adviser Alison Eaglesham.

The new interactive service – delivered by Skills Development Scotland (SDS) – provides information on the jobs market as well as offering help with areas such as tackling tough interview questions.

Catherine told us: “I’m at the point of researching what I want to do when I finish school and wanted to find out what jobs are actually available.

“Through My World of Work I learned about career options and it also helped me understand what my strengths are. I enjoyed finding out about jobs by watching videos of people working in different roles.

“For instance, I loved the one of Davina McCall talking about presenting.”

Heather said: “I’d definitely use My World of Work again and a lot of my friends have made use of it as well.” Since it launched in August last year, more than 55,000 people have already registered on the all-age My World of Work service which offers a revolutionary method of career planning.

It is useful additional element to the service offered by SDS, helping you to find out what kind of job would suit you and how to get it. You can use interactive features to identify your strengths, create CVs, search for jobs or training opportunities and get tips from constantly changing features about job seeking in the here and now.

Alison explained: “It has been popular with school pupils as it offers personal feedback that they can then share with their friends on Facebook.

“My World of Work is also a great source of information for parents and it provides detail on Scotland’s key sectors and areas of growth. They can then use this knowledge to help their children plan their future career.

“It complements our existing face-to-face and telephone services as these remain important elements of the services we offer for a number of our customers.”
