THE 2012 speedway season at Berwick gets under way on Saturday with the Fence Fund Challenge, sponsored by the Railway Hotel at Haddington, with two new names added to the final line-up, writes Lawrence Heppell.
“Unfortunately, the two Polish riders who had offered to come – Tomasz Piszcz and Borys Miturski – won’t be appearing, but for a meeting of this nature for such a good cause, there has been no shortage of willing replacements,” announced the club’s commercial manager, Phil Newton.
“Our old friend Tero ‘The Hero’ Aarnio from Finland will replace Piszcz, and for Borys’ race-jacket we are delighted to have a teenage Australian called Mason Campton, who is over here to race for the league champions up at Glasgow this term. This will in fact be Mason’s first racing appearance in the UK this year, and we’re expecting quite a few curious Tigers’ fans will be tripping down to check out his form, as well as to welcome back Josh Grajczonek, who had to leave their line-up last year after a season-ending crash which cost him a broken leg.”
The complete line-up for Saturday will be headlined by Elite Leaguers Davey Watt, Olly Allen and Adam Shields
Also confirmed are Matej Kus of Redcar, Tero Aarnio, Newcastle’s Christian Henry, Josef ‘Pepe’ Franc (now Sheffield), the two Glasgow-based Australians Grajczonek and Campton and, of course, all seven of the 2012 A & J Scott Bandits.
The riders have agreed to ‘race for nothing’ at the opening meeting of the year to help foot the bill for the brand-new polyfoam fence, making racing safer for the riders who will follow in their tyre-tracks in years to come.
