DEVELOPERS look set to ditch plans to name a 500-home Galashiels estate after a rival Borders town.
Persimmon Homes announced earlier this year that they would name their Easter Langlee site Melrose Gait, causing anger in Galashiels. However, it now appears that Ellwyn Glen will be accepted, having been the popular choice by Galaleans and Galashiels Community Council, who gave the title its approval at its March meeting.
Councillor Fiona Lackenby has spoken to the national firm and said: “They were very apologetic and said they had not an experienced anything like it. I explained to them there was a strong sense of community and belonging in the Borders.
“They said Melrose Gait came from the fact that the development is off Melrose Road, which is quite understandable. They had also considered Lauder as it is on the road to Lauder.”
“The builders will have to change their brochures and other items with Melrose Gait on it, but at least they have now been given a name in Ellwyn Glen that has the support of the community council and community.
“I expect them to accept Ellwyn Glen and continue their good relations with the community, having done well to consult with members of the public at the pre-planning stage.”
She added that Persimmon plans to consult with community councillors on the street names within the development.
The name Ellwyn Glen is taken from the nearby valley which sits between Galashiels and Gattonside.
