BORDERS badminton players enjoyed a highly competitive action-packed day at the Duns tournament with more than 150 games being played between 23 girls and 31 boys from all over the region.
Host coaches Pete Hardie and Grant Purves managed the day well and were thankful for all the help from older squad players, parents and coaches.
In the boys’ singles, Calum Smith (Duns PS) beat West Linton’s Josh Prior in the final. The two semi-finalists were Euan Harvey (Chirnside) and Jake Fairley (Gordon).
Calum took the boys’ doubles title, too, with his partner Liam Smillie (Greenlaw), beating Euan Harvey and Ninian Grant (Gordon). The two semi-finalist pairings were Grant Jackson and Josh Prior and Ben McRae and Alex Craig, all from West Linton. The West Linton group had a fantastic tournament, ably coached by Lily Stenhouse and her son Calum.
In the girls’ tournament Abbey Nicol (Reston) took the title in yet another exciting final against Keira Waddel (Duns). Semi-finalists were Caitlin Gillie (Gala) and Leona Rhind (Duns).
Abbey was in the final again with her partner Teigan Scobie (Gordon) but the duo were unable to beat the stronger pairing of Leona and Keira. Jodie Aitken and Jodie Black (both Reston) and Iona Fox and Caitlin Gillie (Peebles) were the semi-finalists.
