FJORDHUS REIVERS3
INVERLEITH2
REIVERS were expecting a tough match at home against the Edinburgh outfit two places above them in the division – and that’s what they got.
The Fjordhus ladies started strongly, but an unfortunate loss of concentration saw the Edinburgh team slot one past Caroline Duff in goal.
The Reivers kept their heads up and remained composed for the rest of the half, adding a lot of the pressure on the young Inverleith side. Great defensive marking by youngster Rhona Gowans, Jackie Wilson and Claire Townsend kept the Borders side firmly in the game.
Some excellent, attacking running from skilful forward Sarah Mathers saw her pass the ball smoothly to striking counterpart Laura McLean, who chose her spot to beat the keeper.
Mazy running from youngster Leia Mackinnon had the Inverleith defence in a spin and this excellent play resulted in her winning a corner for the home side. Townsend played the ball out to the top of the circle, Janet Jack stopped it and Emily Newlands stepped up and slotted the ball past the static keeper.
Another slick attacking team effort saw left midfielder Kirsty Millar reverse-hit the ball across the circle for attacker Mackinnon to deflect the ball past the keeper, making the score 3-1.
Inverleith changed their formation and, although the Borderers held firm for the most part, the visitors did manage to narrow the gap with a goal at the back post.
This was a very well deserved win, and a welcome three points. Keeper Duff played an outstanding debut performance and is the latest of many young talented players who are coming through the ranks.
