SOUTH CUP QUARTER-FINAL

IN WHAT turned out to be a ding dong battle, Waverley marched into the semi-final of the South of Scotland Cup following a dramatic penalty shoot-out.

During a first half which was played in falling snow, Hearts took the lead. Waverley were undaunted and got on level terms with a top-notch goal when Ross Wallace beat the Law keeper all the way with a glorious left-footed drive from 30 yards.

Dean McColm then put Waverley in front, slotting away a penalty after Jordan Yardley had been brought down in the box.

With the sun out and no sign of snow in the second period, Mark Deans twice hit the post for Waverley. In the closing part of the match, Law equalised with a free kick that took a deflection off a Waverley keeper.

Further drama was to come before the end of the 90, however. After having been cautioned for dissent, Taylor Hope received a second yellow card a minute later for handling the ball and Waverley were down to 10 men for the forthcoming extra time.

A tensely-fought period of 30 minutes brought about no more goals, so it was left to spot kicks to bring about a result.

In mounting tension, Mark Deans, Dean McColm, Ian Turnbull and Jamie Richardson all scored for the Waverley, while Hearts only managed to net twice.
