South seven make the final

OPPORTUNITIES for local players to pull on that famous red and white jersey are few and far between, writes Stuart Cameron.

But on Saturday the South competed at the Rugby Rocks event at Meggetland in Edinburgh, believed to be the first time the team have played in a sevens rugby tournament under the name “The South” although there have been Borders teams who have represented the area in a number of guises such as “Scottish Border Select” and “Kings of the Sevens.”

The squad featured a quality mix of players who have starred on the Kings circuit including three each from Hawick and Jed-Forest, two from Selkirk and one each from Melrose, Kelso, Peebles and Gala.

They won three of their four pool matches, beating Royal Scots, Zoo Mighty and Newitt before being edged out by a strong Esher side.

In the semi-final they beat Samurai 21-19 but then came up against an exceptional British Army team who won the final 45-26.
