Borders seniors shine at Kelvin Hall meeting

LOCAL athletes of all ages took part in a variety of events at the National Indoor Championships at Glasgow’s Kelvin Hall at the weekend.

In the medal count, the region’s most senior athletes shone, bringing back four medals in total.

Jock Steede won gold in the over-70 section of the 60m in 8.99 seconds while Charlie Cochrane picked up silver in the over-35 section 60m in 7.59.

Bruce Scott added to the TLJT tally when he picked up the silver medal, in the over-50 section of the 60m in 8.01, and the bronze in the 200m in 26.32. Tommy Finkle was the only other Border competitor. He finished fourth in the over-45 60m in 7.81 and fourth in the 200m in 25. 78 seconds.

Earlier in the day Edinburgh AC won the senior relay championships with two Borders athletes in the team. Greg Turnbull and John Glen competed alongside capital runners Peter Lowden and Tom Holligan.

On Thursday the Scottish Schools Championships took place at the same venue with most local youngsters competing against older athletes in their sections.

However there were some notable performances from the Borders contingent.

Jazmine Tomlinson (Jedburgh Grammar) and Olivia O’Hare (Peebles HS) took bronze, Jazmine in the U16s girls 200m (27.28) and Olivia in the 800m (2.22.88).

Sophie Elder, also from Jedburgh Grammar, ran her first race of the season at the Scottish Schools Championships and finished second in her heat, and third in the semi-final, just missing a place in the final of the 300m over 16 girls.

Craig Smith, 13, clocked 7.86 seconds in the 60m U16 section and was very close to qualifying for the semis. Mhairi Henderson who was recovering from a sickness bug, performed below her best and came a close second in her 300m heat. Steph Common recorded 28.20 seconds to finish second in her heat and was eliminated by 0.02 second. Charlie Wilson recorded 7.46 in his heat of the over-16s 60m to qualify for the semis, a feat he duplicated in the 200m in 24.08. All four are products of TLJT Athletics Club.

Henry Clarkson (Selkirk High) 12, went for experience in the U16 boys long jump, delighting coach Linda Nicholson with a personal best of 4 metres 88cm.
