THE handicap singles competition started last week with the first tie between Craig Riddell and Scott Thompson ending in a convincing win for Riddell.
Brian Anderson was also on form, beating Ian Macdonald in the second tie of the night. The tie between Alan Howlieson and Tom Boyd saw some excellent bowls with the latter winning after a nail-biting extra end. The last tie of the week was between Jackie Hardie and Doug Orr which Hardie won by the narrowest of margins.
On Friday night, Abbotsford hosted a friendly match against Ettrick Forest, and in the rink games the first home rink skipped by Ian Macdonald scraped home to win by three shots while the second home rink skipped by Tom Boyd had a very convincing win. In the pairs competition, Vic Graham and Elliot Fraser defeated Kev Stanners and Kenny Hendry in the final.
TWEEDBANK
This week’s action has been centred on the first round of the Scottish Senior Cup and the second round of Scottish Team Championship.
In the case of the seniors, the match was against Stirling and the venue the Meadowmill Stadium in East Lothian.
With some experienced players missing, a struggle was expected and in the first five ends this was the case as the Tweedbank seniors only managed six shots while conceding 30. In the next five ends a total transformation took place and after ten ends the deficit had been reduced to just 10.
By 15 ends, Tweedbank were still adrift by 13 shots and Stirling took the victory.
The Scottish Team Championship match took place on Saturday against Bainfield at Falkirk.
The format is individual mixed matches in singles, pairs, triples and fours categories with two points awarded for each win and in the event of a draw the match is decided on shot difference overall. The Tweedbank team finished with two wins so each team had four points. On shot difference Tweedbank were unlucky in that Bainfield had 77 shots while Tweedbank had 74 shots.
At club level it was the semi-finals for ladies’ and gents’ singles. For the ladies, Christine Miller beat Jackie Ormiston and will face Gail Lindores in the final. For the men, Kenny Johnstone beat Alistair White and will face Ian Crawford who beat Ivan Hogg.
