MANY a tale was told by members and guests at the Selkirk Golf Club annual pre-season dinner held last Friday evening at the clubhouse.
Despite the unseasonal weather which may have put paid to any golf actually being played last weekend, a packed house of 40 members, supporters and friends were in attendance.
After an excellent meal, the main guest speaker role was given to the safe hands of Les Millar (on a night off from his civic duties) who held the attention of all those present as he regaled the audience while proposing the toast to Selkirk Golf Club.
With stories ranging from his own past golf experiences, as well as giving an insight into aspects of the lesser-known history of the club, Les was, as ever, an ideal speaker who really kicked the night off with a bang.
The reply to the toast was undertaken by long-time club member and Winter Woolie enthusiast Norman Roxburgh.
Norman, a rector of Earlston High School for 18 years, thanked Les for the informative speech he delivered, while describing his own passion for Selkirk Hill and Selkirk Golf Club in particular.
Norman readily acknowledged how lucky members were to have such a club on their doorstep, and the reasons for this being so, remarks which were warmly received by all those gathered.
After some fine entertainment, which was provided throughout the night by both Darren and Tommy Knox, the Toast to Sport was given by the last of the invited guest speakers, Selkirk Rugby Club secretary Ian Walker.
He described at length the strength of community and purpose that can be found within all of the town’s sporting clubs, and in sport generally.
His witty, but serious thoughts on how this has been developed during the current difficult economic period was certainly appreciated.
A hearty vote of thanks was proposed by vice-captain Stuart Kemp who thanked all those concerned.
He also commended the generosity shown by the ensemble of guests who raised £100 towards junior coaching and in making the evening such a success.
Alan Wheelans, who had chaired the event so ably while in his second year of office as club captain, thanked all those for their attendance and continued support, while wishing them all well for the season that lay ahead.
As the night drew to a close, proceedings were rounded off with a short, but hugely-rousing third half chaired by past captain Nod Purves, with entertainment being provided from within the company.
The season’s opening spectacle that is the captain versus president match, postponed from last Saturday due to heavy snow, will be played tomorrow – weather permitting, of course.
All members are asked to keep an eye on the club noticeboard for any changes.
