Earlston U -15A 20
Berwickshire U-15B 5
LAST weekend’s plate final saw Earlston Under-15A, the 2012 runners-up to Berwickshire by only one goal, hungry for their first taste of league silverware.
However, Team Berwickshire’s Under-15B team had nothing to lose, being one year younger than their opponents and looking to take any opportunity to upset predictions.
Despite some fine moves from the youngsters, there was little Berwickshire could do to stop the stronger and more experienced Earlston squad from carrying out its mission.
Earlston’s early lead of 8-0 at quarter-time extended to a 16-1 scoreline by half-time.
Still Berwickshire clung on, turning the tables during the third quarter with three goals to their opponents’ one.
Earlston rallied in the final stage, and were delighted to finally run out winners at 20 -5.
Earlston Under-15A: Eilidh McDonagh (captain), Flora Purves (vice-captain), Lauren Neville, Lindsay Maguire, Alanna Taddei, Phoebe Miller, Lynsey Robertson, Sorcha Tolland, Sarah Lyons.
z This season’s Aitken Turnbull Architects-sponsored Border League drew to a close at the Gytes in Peebles with an outstanding display of netball.
Within three years the league has been instrumental in providing a hugely successful competitive framework for teenage girls across the region, with new coaches, umpires and team managers all emerging from the ranks of female volunteers.
Four clubs take part in the league: Earlston, Hawick, Peebles and Berwickshire, with the teams reaching finals’ day playing in earlier pools and all winning their respective semi-finals.
Peebles Netball coach Linda Nicholson, who oversees the running of the Border League, told The Southern: “Once again the bar has been raised and the calibre of play in the league has reached a high standard.
“Long may it continue.”
