Eyemouth United 3
Selkirk 2
Selkirk travel to Duns this week, buoyed by a decent performance against title hopefuls Eyemouth United.
Despite watching his team lose 3-2 to the fishermen, Selkirk vice-president Ross Anderson thought the Souters put on a very positive performance, especially in the second half when going a man down, and feels his team have been slightly unlucky to be in such a low position in the league.
He told The Wee Paper: “Other teams grind out results, we seem to grind out defeats. We just haven’t been getting the rub of the green.”
Selkirk were three goals down at half-time. So quick was the first that Eyemouth manager Carl Hudson was still putting his tie on in the dressing room when it happened.
James Wilson provided a perfect cross for Conor Lough to head home in the second minute.
After this breakthrough, Eyemouth enjoyed a good spell of possession, before the game began to get a bit scrappy largely because of the conditions.
Eyemouth’s second came after Selkirk keeper John Dodds came rushing out and Nicky Clark calmly lobbed past both him and the covering defender. The third goal came from a penalty when Dodds brought down Steven Shennan in the box and the latter repaid the favour by slotting away the resulting penalty.
After the restart, the tide turned. The physical Souters had several free kick chances, with both their goals coming from set-pieces.
Pressure was somewhat relieved when a rash tackle from Daryl Johnson saw the Souters go down to 10 men but the deficit in numbers only served to fuel the Souters’ appetite.
Euan Pritchard took full advantage when Eyemouth failed to clear a free kick, an easy tap-in rekindling his team’s hopes, before a corner kick ended up being bundled into the home goal by substitute Callum Peoples.
Anderson added: “It took them a while to get used to the size of the pitch, which is small compared to what they are used to. They came good in the end, though, and probably deserved a draw out of it.”
