Girls’ rugby in the Borders received a major boost through a full-contact Festival, held on International Women’s Day, at the Netherdale 3G Arena, pictured above.
Around 80 girls, aged 15 and under, from all nine Borders secondary schools, participated in the event, which provided the opportunity to play and develop skills in full contact rugby.
With the support of Borders Sports and Leisure Trust, this event was organised by club development officers as part of the Scottish Rugby Union’s commitment to developing female rugby.
The festival aimed to assess interest in women’s rugby with a view to inspiring young players to potentially form a Borders team.
Scottish Rugby’s regional development manager Brian Renwick said: “I think it is great to see so many girls playing full-contact rugby, which shows there is a real desire with girls to play the game. Hopefully this will be a springboard for lots of future events.
