Reivers do well in qualifier

ROXBURGH REIVERS Orienteering Club are in to the final of the 2013 British Clubs Championships, despite fielding an incomplete team.

After a long journey to Aboyne at the weekend the club were thrilled to make it through, having missed qualification in recent years.

The courses were tough with recent forestry operations cluttering the forest floor, and there was a deep layer of snow on the top of the hill at Birsemore. However, everyone stuck to their task of making sure they finished with no mispunches and the reward is a place in the final at the Forest of Dean in October. John Tullie deserves a mention for his Club Captain role in filling a gap by running the men’s long course and being the oldest by quite a margin.

Individual highlights were 1st places for Kirstin Maxwell and Karen Maxwell, 2nd spots for Lindsey Knox and Robin Sloan, 4th places for Eileen Maxwell and Susan Shiell, 5th John Tullie, 6th Ian Maxwell.

The next local event is at the Eildon Hills, Melrose on Saturday with starts from 1 to 2pm. Courses for beginners and the more experienced are available. Details at www.roxburghreivers.org.uk
