GEORGE RILEY reports from Woodside Park

UNITED and table-toppers Coldstream shared the points in an incident-packed game at Woodside Park.

Both teams had opportunities to win, but found keepers Scott Dowie and Mark Walters in top form.

During the opening stages United’s Liam Wallace flashed a cross past the post before a Sean Simpson shot and a header by Kieren Ainslie went wide at the other end.

Midway through the first half the visitors went close when a free kick by Michael Allan found Lawrie Cannon in the box, but the midfielder pulled his shot inches wide.

A long ball through the middle by United saw a mix-up in the Coldstream defence, with both Josh McLeod and Mark Walters going for the same ball. This led to an exchange between the two players and ended with both getting booked.

The homesters went in front five minutes before the break when Stuart Harker rose to flick a header into the path of Wallace, who shot past Walters.

The Streamers went down to 10 men just before the break. Martyn Tait, who had already been yellow-carded, sat on the ground for a period after being fouled and when the Coldstream bag man almost reached him, he got up and sprinted to his full-back position. The referee deemed he had been deliberately delaying play and he was shown his second yellow, swiftly followed by red.

Just after the restart, a corner from Sean Simpson found John Crawford in space in the box, but the striker’s right-footed shot was saved by Dowie at point-blank range.

United had a great chance to increase their lead when a Harker pass found Des Burnett through one-on-one with the Coldstream keeper. However, the big No. 1 was equal to the task, saving at the United frontman’s feet. Walters was in action again, scooping a Wallace corner off the goal line, although many United players felt that the ball was over.

The Berwickshire outfit levelled in the 75th minute when a Sean Simpson shot was parried by Dowie into the path of Crawford, who made no mistake from close range.

The visitors were awarded a penalty eight minutes from time when Damien McNulty fouled Johnny Simpson in the box. Allan stepped up to take the kick, but his effort was thwarted by a Dowie diving save.

Kelso: S. Dowie, J. McCutcheon (G. Mabon 81), S. Angus, D. McNulty, G. McNulty, S. Tait, L. Wallace, C. Black, D. Burnett, S. Harker (C. McClure 68) (C. Webb 81), J. Lauder.
