JOHN SLORANCE reports from Wilton Lodge Park

WAVERLEY gained full points, but had to fight all the way to get the better of a good young Greenlaw outfit.

Under the wing of player/manager Lawrie Dunn, who began the season in a similar role with Hawick Royal Albert, the visitors were first to look dangerous when Lee Hannah broke through to fire in a shot which was saved by Waverley keeper Euan Reilly.

The hosts then showed what they had to offer when Liam Lavery passed to Ross Wallace, whose effort was blocked by the foot of Greenlaw number one David Catlin.

After Alan Campbell had cleared a net-bound William Smillie shot off the home goal line, Waverley broke the deadlock in the 18th minute.

Catlin palmed away a Liam Lavery header and the striker met the rebound with his head, but Catlin again put up the shutters with a one-handed save.

Once more the ball broke back to Lavery, who this time drilled his shot into the net.

Six minutes later and Waverley were two up via a Neal McConnell header.

McConnell then came near to notching another with a strike that dipped narrowly over the bar.

With 17 minutes of the second period gone, Waverley were reduced to 10 men. Ian Turnbull, who had been booked earlier, picked up a second caution for a handling offence.

Greenlaw began to gain the edge, but failed to turn pressure into goals, although Smillie went close with a shot from a Hannah pass that brought the best out of Reilly.

After Catlin had thwarted Waverley at the other end by tipping a Ross McLeod drive round the post, the homesters added to their tally in the 78th minute. Latching onto the ball in midfield, Taylor Hope unleashed a raging shot that soared into the net.

In the closing stages, McLeod robbed the Berwickshire side of what would have been a deserved goal when he headed a Jake Galbraith shot off the line.
