NATIONAL UNDER-18 YOUTH LEAGUE CUP

GALA WANDERERS travelled to Dumfries on Saturday for their first round tie in this year’s National Youth Cup, where they encountered a stuffy, well-drilled Dumfries Colts side.

Straight from the kick-off Gala knew they were in for tough day out and five minutes into the game they found themselves 5-0 down after they lost their own line-out on the 22m line and Dumfries prop Callum Jackson drove over for the try.

Gala gradually worked themselves back into the game and after 25 minutes started to get the upper hand when James Parker was set free to score under the posts with Keith Young converting. Half-time: Dumfries Colts 5 Gala Wanderers 7.

A similar start to the first half saw Dumfries powering back into the game after the break when centre John McWilliams crashed over from close range, this time with Ben Radley adding the extras.

Wands woke up and started to play as they can, upping the tempo, firstly with Ruari Howarth scoring an excellent solo try, Young converting, then Liam Scott forcing himself over to stretch the lead to 12-19.

Dumfries scored a further penalty before James Parker finished off the try-scoring for the visitors with Young again adding the extras. Gala now play Boroughmuir Colts at Meggetland this Saturday.
