ON the 40th anniversary of the greatest try ever scored, its architect Phil Bennett will speak at the Voice of Rugby dinner in Edinburgh next month.

Bennett started off the flowing Barbarians move which resulted in Gareth Williams scoring against New Zealand in 1973, and he will entertain the audience at the Prestonfield on March 8, alongside former Scotland captains Rob Wainwright and Andy Nichol.

The fundraiser for the Bill McLaren Fountain was sold out in its first two years, and takes place on the same weekend as Scotland play Wales in the 6 Nations at Murrayfield.

Linda Lawson, Bill’s daughter and Foundation director, said: “Events such as these are vital to our fundraising efforts and we are hugely grateful for the continuing support of the rugby and business communities.

“We are especially delighted to welcome our speakers Phil Bennett, Rob Wainwright and Andy Nichol, all of whom rated very highly in Dad’s list of favourites. It will be a great night.”
