WITH the seniors indoor league over, Tweedbank bowlers took part in the Jock Brodie competition at Meadowmill.

In the first match against West Lothian, two of the three rinks suffered heavy defeats, while the third rink managed to salvage a draw for the team’s only point.

There was better news for the seniors the next day in the first round of the Top 6 competition at Portobello. Up against Stirling, David Weir represented the club in the singles, winning 21-14, while in the pairs Billy Nisbet and Rob Fulton had little trouble in their 18-3 win.

In the triples, Tom Thorburn, Jimmy Redpath and Peter McGauchrane led 10-6 before dropping four shots on the last end to finish with a draw to make the final score 5-1 to Tweedbank.

Last Saturday saw the playdowns in the triples category for both ladies and gents.

The ladies faced Abbeyview from Dunfermline in the preliminary round at the Midlothian Stadium in Dalkeith.

Unfortunately the ladies were well beaten, the final score being 24-7 to Abbeyview.

The gents enjoyed more success against the same club in the prelim round at Meadowmill, squeezing through 19-17.

Tweedbank beat Bainfield 19-10 in the next stage, setting up a meeting with a West Lothian triple the following day.

In a severe test for the triple of Ben McGregor, Malcolm Thin and Kenny Johnstone, the Tweedbank trio trailed by six shots until they recovered with a count of four.

Despite their best efforts, West Lothian managed to add two further shots in the final two ends to win 16-12.

This Saturday sees the gents start their Scottish Cup campaign against Coatbridge, with the ladies facing West Lothian on February 9.

At club level, the mixed league matches – cancelled on January 21 because of the weather – have been rearranged for this Tuesday, February 5.
