TWEEDBANK
A WEEK of matches in various competitions gave mixed results for the club in the last week.
The week started with the Tweedbank B team of seniors taking part in the first of the round robin matches in the Jock Brodie competition played at Meadowmill. Playing on a carpet which is much faster than Tweedbank, the players had some difficulty and were unable to gain any points.
On the following day the first match in the Top Six competition for seniors was also played at Meadowmill, the opponents being from West Lothian.
In the triples there was a win and two points for Tommy Mann, David Weir and Peter McGauchrane, while in the singles the two points went to West Lothian. This left the pairs to decide the match and Billy Nisbet and Rob Fulton gained a narrow victory on the very last end. Tweedbank therefore go through by four points to two and will play either Midlothian or Alloa at Balbardie.
On Saturday, it was the preliminary round of the men’s Scottish Cup and the venue was again Meadowmill, where the opponents were neighbours Teviotdale.
In a match which the Tweedbank men would have hoped for a win, they started badly and never really recovered. For the most part, the Teviotdale team played better and deserved their victory by 93-77.
On Sunday, Tweedbank was at Meadowmill for a fourth time for the Scottish Team Championship, the opponents being Balbardie.
This competition is decided on the basis of four categories of games – the victorious team earning two points for each win gained. In the singles there was a narrow 21-17 defeat for Kenny Johnstone.
In the triples category, Christine Miller, David Miller and Ross Nichol were well ahead of their opponents, as was the case with Marie Todd, Betty Johnstone, Neil McNally and Ian Crawford in the fours. At the same time Gail Lindores and Derick Pearce were behind in the pairs.
In the last four ends, the pair gained eight shots to lose by just a single and therefore with good wins in the triples and fours, Tweedbank had a far superior shot difference overall. On Sunday, February 12, the team will play either East Lothian or Bainfield at a venue yet to be decided.
At club level there was a very successful Burns game on Friday, with a maximum 48 players taking part. The winners were J. Nisbet, J. Jefferson, J. Webster and P. Houston.
The next game in this popular club event will be on Friday, February 10.
With the men playing away on Saturday past, the ladies had the Nan Wintrup Two-bowl pairs event in which there were 10 pairs taking part. Winners were Moira Weir and Margaret Aitken.
