THE A68 road at Carter Bar has reopened, but motorists are advised to use extra caution as snow and gale-force winds continues to hit the Borders.

And Scottish Borders Council say a meeting this afternoon will decide if schools will open tomorrow.

The snow is expected to fall over the area until tomorrow and SBC’s emergency bunker at its Newtown headquarters is in full operation alongside police and health services.

All school transport was cancelled last night with schools making the decision to remain open or close.

Schools to close completely were Eddleston, Newlands, Walkerburn, Morebattle, Gordon, Westruther, Yarrow, Swinton, Eccles/Leitholm, Chirnside and Heriot.

High schools have also been hit, with prelim exams called off for some fourth year pupils.

A number of nurseries and support centres have been shut today due to the conditions, while social work services which closed included Ability Centre in Galashiels and Cheviot Day Service in Kelso.

Council gritting teams have been out since 6am but there have still been a number of accidents this morning, including a car that left the road on the A699 near Selkirk and another incident near Borders General Hospital.

The A697 between Greenlaw and Wark in Northumberland remains closed, while a lorry has blocked the B6456 east of Westruther.

Keep checking TheSouthern for updates on weather conditions, road and service closures.
