AT their weekly Primestock Sale held at Wooler last Wednesday John Swan Ltd had forward and sold 1,109 hoggs and 346 ewes.

Hogg numbers tight due to vendors worries over trade, but selling vendors left happy after returns well above early week markets, In spec Hoggs in great demand.

AT St Boswells Mart on Monday John Swan Ltd sold 115 clean cattle, 90 OTM cattle, 2,510 old season lambs and 787 ewes.

Bullocks (43) averaged 213p per kg and sold to 236p (-4.7p on week), heifers (71) averaged 212.4p per kg and sold to 235p (-3.8p on week), one young bull averaged 211p per kg and sold to 211p (n/c on week) and 90 beef type OTM cattle averaged 135p per kg and sold to187p (+1.8p on the week).

The 2,510 old season lambs averaged 143.3p per kg and sold to £91(-9.1p on week) including 861 38-41kg lambs which averaged 154.3p pkg. 787 ewes averaged £50.35 and sold to £103 (-£6.87 on week).

BORDER LIVESTOCK

LAST week Border Livestock Exchange Ltd sold 104 prime cattle, 61 cast cows, 2,177 prime sheep including 365 ewes, and 94 store and breeding cattle.

Prime cattle continue to be in short supply with top quality home bred Charolais heifers from Blackadder Mains, Duns, selling to 372p per kg. Charolais heifers from Chesterhill, Belford, sold to 370p per kg and £1,491 per head. Aberdeen Angus and Shorthorn steers from Cairndinnis, Haddington, sold to 395p per kg.

Lambs look good value for the time of year. Top prices for Texel and Suffolk crosses to 350p per kg from Embleton Steads, Alnwick; Sweethope Farm, Kirkwhelpington; Stagehall, Stow and Deanfoot Farms, Hawick. Romney crosses to 340p per kg from Humbleton, Wooler. Blackfaced lambs to 345p per kg from Prendwick Farm, Alnwick. Cast ewes sold to £91.50 for Suffolk crosses; Mules to £66.50; Easycare to £63.50 and Meatlinc crosses to £62.50.

LONGTOWN

THE Cumberland and Dumfriesshire Farmers Mart PLC had forward 35 prime cattle, six young bulls, 45 over 30 month cattle, 5,260 prime hoggs and 7,549 cast ewes and rams at their weekly sale at Longtown last Thursday.

A similar sized show of prime cattle saw quality scarce, with the best cattle continuing to sell at recent rates. The sale was topped at 225.5p for a Limousin heifer shown by Messrs Faulder, Houghton House.

A small show of prime bulls yet again met a brisk trade and sold to 229.5p for a great Blonde d’Aquitaine shown by J. Jardine, Yett Farm.

An increased and improved show of cast cows were forward and were in demand. Top price of 215p for a Limousin bullock shown by Messrs Ritson, Swaites with cows to 193p for Limousin from Blindhillbush.

Another large show of 5,260 hoggs were forward to a full ring of buyers. The sale average was 147.1p (SQQ 149.5p), dearer than other centres this week. Export hoggs and best quality hoggs demanded an excellent premium with one of the best shows for quality seen in many years. The trade for these hoggs eclipses most other centres each week and are keenly sought after. The sale topped at 239p per kilo for Beltex from A.F. Young and Co., Bankhead and to £92.80 per head for Texels from D. and D. Aitken, Upper Cleugh and from T. Another large show of 7,549 cast ewes and rams were forward to the usual ring of buyers with best selling ewes similar on the week with all other classes £3 less on the week. Blackface and Cheviot export ewes and plain ewes remain similar.
