A BORDERS cycle shop is staging a new Spanish-style sportive to raise money for a children’s charity.
The event, Borders Ciclista, in May is being organised by Borders Cycles in Hawick and will see cyclists complete either a 50-mile or 75-mile route, or both, over two days to raise money for Action Medial Research, a UK charity funding research to help sick babies, children with disabilities and those suffering from a rare disease.
The sportive will differ to others in the UK because the fundraising cyclists of all abilities will bike together.
Organisers on the event’s online page say: “Unlike any other sportive in the UK, competitors will ride together as a bunch, at a controlled leisurely speed, for a significant amount of the overall distance. The peloton will be led round by a vehicle to ensure no-one gets dropped, motorbikes will help ensure that junctions are safe, and a mechanic will follow in a vehicle behind.”
But there will also be ‘free’ sections which are timed – though organisers stress the event is not a race. Everyone will regroup after the timed section where there will be food and water before continuing.
The event is limited to 100 participants on each day. For more information visit www.bordersciclista.com and to book a place ring 01450 375976 or email info@borderscycles.com.
