Jan 19th: PEEBLES Under 13s netball team retained their Border League trophy for the second consecutive year following a cracking final against Earlston. The two teams rose to the occasion in a highly-competitive game and produced some remarkable and mature play throughout.
Feb 2nd: BORDERS athletes made their mark on the national professional circuit early in the year by nailing all three podium places in the inaugural Pitreavie Gift Sprint. TLJT runner Darrin Scott (9m) from Ancrum took first place in the main event with clubmates David Edwards (7.5m) and Tommy Finkle (10.5m) coming home second and third respectively.
Feb 2nd: THERE was no winter blues for Gala Fairydean chairman Jos Ritchie as he gave the new 3G pitch at Netherdale a brush up prior to the inaugural match on the much anticipated all weather surface.
Feb: HAWICK’S Stuart Hogg got his first start for his country in the third round of the 2012 Six Nations tournament and did not disappoint his Borders supporters, going over for a try in the match against France which ultimately ended in a 23-17 defeat.
March 1st: FORMER Rangers striker Mark Hateley took aim at sports facilities in the Borders and Scotland when he officially opened the junior football club’s new changing rooms – named The Engine Room – in the former Gibson Park fire station.
April 12th: MEMBERS of the Borders Elite Swimming Team were on the crest of a wave following the National Age Group Championships and brought home an impressive medal haul. April 26th: AFTER a gap of 13 years Gala RFC lifted the Scottish Cup at Murrayfield with a magnificent final performance which saw the Maroons run out 24-10 winners over West Coast rivals Ayr.
June 19: WESTRUTHER sailing starlet Callum Airlie had a summer of globetrotting ahead – but the teenager started it with the world watching him running in the Olympic Torch Relay. The 16-year-old got his hands on the torch, which was travelling the length and breadth of the country, on June 14 in Gordon as hundreds flocked to catch a glimpse. He was later chosen as one of seven promising young British athletes to light the Olympic Torch at the opening ceremony of London 2012.
